Al-Helou hosts a cancer ward and a neonatal unit where 12 premature babies are being cared for. Medical staff told Wafa that more than 90 people, including doctors, nurses and patients, remained trapped inside the hospital as Israeli tanks surrounded the facility, blocking both entry and exit.
At the time of the explosions, the hospital housed 12 newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit, five patients in the internal medicine department, two pregnant women, and 54 hospital staff.
Footage confirm the Israeli military's targeting of Al-Helou International Hospital in Gaza City. The facility, located only dozens of meters away from the Al-Shifa Medical Complex.
The hospital's director, Tharwat Al-Helou, informed Al Jazeera that the facility is suffering from a total depletion of water and fuel supplies. He further highlighted the catastrophic sanitary conditions, stating that medical teams have been forced to use contaminated rainwater for sterilization purposes due to the complete lack of clean water resources."
On the 1st November at 20:00, the Al Hilo Hospital, also in Gaza city, was reportedly struck by shelling; the hospital had absorbed and replaced Shifa hospital’s maternity ward, which is being used now to treat the wounded.
Al Helou is in close proximity to areas recently placed under evacuation orders, so far remains partially functional, the expansion of hostilities and access obstructions risk rendering them non-functional at any time.
