Israeli bombardment around medical facilities has forced the shutdown of Al-Rantisi Children’s Hospital and Gaza City’s Eye Hospital, the only public eye-care center in the territory, the Health Ministry said Monday.

No casualties were reported but the strikes caused panic among patients and staff. Significant damage to rooftop water tanks, electrical and communication systems, and some medical equipment were reported. 40 patients fled for safety, while 40 others, including 4 children in the intensive care and 8 newborns, remain inside."

The IDF released to the BBC details of phone conversations between an official at Rantisi and a senior officer in the IDF, in which they discussed arrangements to get ambulances to evacuate patients. The hospital official asked about hundreds of displaced civilians camped out at the two hospitals. The Israeli officer told them to leave via the main entrance at 11:20 and explained in detail which streets they should walk along to leave Gaza City. And he twice told the hospital official to make sure civilians were carrying something white to show they were not combatants. "They will all go out with their hands in the air," the hospital official said. "Perfect," the Israeli said.
The hospital was besieged putting the lives of patients at risk due to continued attacks and lack of medical supplies.
Videos taken from the hospital window show two tanks in the surrounding streets. IDF drone footage released on 14 November – three days after the period studied by the Guardian – shows four Israeli tanks parked next to the hospital, and nine tanks in the streets surrounding the hospital. View full incident →On 9 November 2023 the IDF ordered al-Rantisi Hospital to evacuate, claiming there was Hamas infrastructure in the facility. Tanks were seen in the vicinity of the hospital and the hospital director said that the facility was bombed twice, killing at least one child. Many children could not be evacuated because they were unable to walk and actively receiving care such as dialysis and chemo. The bombings resulted in large fires in the hospital causing damage. The hospital ran out of fuel rendering it out of service and leaving 38 children with kidney failure without access to dialysis treatment.
On 6 November, Israel ordered al-Rantisi Hospital to evacuate, claiming facility was being used by Hamas. For the second consecutive day, on 7 November, the Israeli military ordered the evacuation of the Rantisi hospital in Gaza city, claiming that armed groups were using its premises and surroundings. This hospital is the only pediatric facility in northern Gaza, and it also accommodates about 6,000 IDPs. According to the MoH in Gaza, its evacuation would jeopardize the lives of 15 children on life support, 38 children undergoing kidney dialysis, 10 children relying on artificial respiratory devices, and others who are injured.

Rantisi Hospital was struck directly and indirectly causing damage to the facility, killing four people, and injuring 35 people. The water tanks and solar panels were hit, cutting off running water. At the time of the attack there were about 5,000 people on hospital grounds including patients, staff, and displaced families sheltering there.
